HC Deb 15 July 1992 vol 211 c809W
Mr. Alan W. Williams

To ask the Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food what is the total number of confirmed cases of BSE for each year since 1986 and each month in 1992 in(a) Dyfed, (b) Wales and (c) Great Britain.

Mr. Soames

There were 847 cases of BSE confirmed in Great Britain prior to the disease becoming notifiable on 21 June 1988. Of these, 55 were in Wales, 33 of which were in Dyfed. Since then the number of confirmed cases is as follows, by year of report:

Dyfed Wales Great Britain
1988 63 131 2,185
1989 238 506 7,136
1990 583 1,078 14,179
1991 1,256 2,232 25,013
January 1992 196 318 3,420
February 1992 156 302 2,871
March 1992 197 351 3,100
April 1992 187 294 2,771

1992 figures are incomplete due to the time between cases being reported and confirmation by histopathology.

Mr. Alan W. Williams
