24. Mr. Etherington

To ask the Secretary of State for Health what assessment she has made of the appropriateness of granting trust status to hospitals caring for persons with learning disabilities.

Mr. Yeo

All units applying for national health service trust status are carefully assessed by a stringent set of criteria. These include:

  • identifying the benefits and improved quality of service;
  • ensuring the management has the skills to run the trust:
  • ensuring that senior professional staff, including consultants are involved in the management of the trust;
  • and assessing the financial viability of the trust.
