To ask the Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food what efforts have been undertaken by his Department to enforce the United Nations ban on the use of large-scale drift nets.

From 1 June 1992 the United Kingdom, in common with other European Community states, applied Communitywide measures which, with certain exceptions not relevant to the British fishing fleet, prohibit the use by EC vessels of drift nets longer than 2.5km wherever they fish. These measures go further than the United Nations resolution which only dealt with drift nets used on the high seas.
