§ Mr. Peter LloydNo prisoners in England or Wales are kept in solitary confinement. This is a type of punishment designed to deprive a prisoner of all human contact and is not available under the prison rules. At HM prison Armley, Leeds all mentally ill inmates are held in the health care centre in single rooms or on an open ward. Those allocated a single room spend the normal daytime hours in association with other inmates.
