To ask the Secretary of State for the Home Department if he will make a statement on Her Majesty's Government's role in the Centre for the Validation of Alternative Methods in relation to animal research.

Mr. Charles Wardle

The European Centre for the Validation of Alternative Methods is a new body established by the European Commission, and is concerned with the validation of alternatives to the use of animals in research.

The United Kingdom remains committed to the search for ways of refining, reducing or replacing the use of living animals in scientific procedures. It stands ready to play a full part in the work of the centre.
