HC Deb 13 July 1992 vol 211 c501W
Mr. Hawksley

To ask the President of the Board of Trade if a thimble is too small to carry a mechanical pictogram CE mark as described in annex 11, section 2.12 of the personal protective equipment directive, how big it should be before it is exempt.

Mr. Sainsbury

All PPE units covered by the personal protective equipment directive 89/686/EEC are required to bear the CE mark both on the unit, regardless of its size, and its packaging. Thimbles for private use are not covered by the directive. Those for professional use are.

A Commission proposal on the CE mark currently under discussion would, if adopted as currently drafted, amend the directive and other new approach directives to provide for the mark to be affixed to the packaging or other associated documentation where for practical reasons it cannot be placed on the unit itself.

Paragraph 2.12 of annex II of the directive relates to identification or recognition marks other than the CE mark.
