HC Deb 13 July 1992 vol 211 cc494-5W
Mrs. Ray Michie

To ask the Secretary of State for the Home Department what was the cost of sending annual reminders to overseas voters wishing to register under the Representation of the People Act 1989 for each year since 1980 and if he will make a statement.

Mr. Peter Lloyd

Annual reminders are sent to overseas electors by electoral registration officers. Details of the costs are not held centrally and could be obtained only at disproportionate cost.

Mrs. Ray Michie

To ask the Secretary of State for the Home Department what was the Government's total budget for advertising and publicising the new provisions for overseas voting (a) in the Representation of the People Act 1985 and (b) in the Representation of the People Act 1989; and if he will make a statement.

Mr. Peter Lloyd

The total costs of advertising the provisions of the Representation of the People Acts 1985 and 1989 were £279,000 and £705,000 respectively. In addition, £1,400 was spent in 1991 on updating posters used in British diplomatic posts abroad.
