HC Deb 13 July 1992 vol 211 cc504-5W
Mr. Llew Smith

To ask the President of the Board of Trade what research he has commissioned into substitutes for chlorofluorocarbons in technologies where CFCs are currently regarded as essential components; and what chemicals are involved.

Mr. Leigh

There is a continuous programme of research by industry worldwide into ozone-benign alternatives to chlorofluorocarbons. The programme has had a number of successes including the announcement by ICI on 1 July of their new ozone-benign refrigerant, KLEA 32.

The DTI encourages industry-led research into environmentally-friendly technologies through a number of schemes of financial support and these schemes are open both to producers of alternatives to CFCs and to those developing cleaner process technologies which reduce or eliminate the need for CFC-based substances.
