Mr. Bayley

To ask the Secretary of State for Health how many people had been on hospital waiting lists in England in total, and in each specialty, on 1 April 1991 and on 1 April 1992 for(a) three months or less, (b) six months or less, (c) 12 months or less, (d) 24 months or less and (e) over 24 months.

Mr. Sackville

The information as at 31 March 1991 is given in the table. Figures for 31 March 1992 by specialty are not yet available centrally. For the provisional overall picture at 31 March 1992, I refer the hon. Member to the reply my right hon. Friend the Secretary of State gave to my hon. Friend the Member for Uxbridge (Mr. Shersby) on 12 May at columns489–92. These show that between 31 March 1991 and 31 March 1992 the number waiting over two years fell by 97 per cent. and the total number waiting dropped by 3.5 per cent. or 33,131.
