To ask the Secretary of State for Wales if he will make a statement on his proposals for Tir Cymen.

§ Sir Wyn Roberts
A countryside stewardship scheme in Wales, to be called Tir Cymen, has been developed by the Countryside Council for Wales and an announcement regarding its introduction will be made shortly.

§ Mr. Alex Carlile
To ask the Secretary of State for Wales how many applications he has received for participation in the countryside stewardship programme from farmers in(a) the United Kingdom and (b) Wales; and if he will make a statement.

The countryside stewardship scheme run by the Countryside Commission in England is a matter for my right hon. and learned Friend the Secretary of State for the Environment. A countryside stewardship scheme in Wales, to be called Tir Cymen, has been developed by the Countryside Council for Wales and an announcement regarding its introduction will be made shortly.
