HC Deb 30 January 1992 vol 202 c644W
Mr. Wigley

To ask the Secretary of State for Wales if he will publish the total number of deaths from lung cancer in Wales and the estimated proportion of deaths caused by exposure to radon gas.

Mr. Nicholas Bennett

During 1990 there were 1,976 deaths from lung cancer in Wales. It is not possible to give an accurate estimate of how many, if any, of these were caused by exposure to radon. The National Radiological Protection Board estimates that 5 per cent. of lung cancer deaths in the United Kingdom may be attributable to exposure to radon.

Information on lung cancer deaths in years prior to 1990 is contained in the OPCS publication "Mortality Statistics: Area"—Series DH5—which is available in the Library of the House.
