§ Mr. CallaghanTo ask the Secretary of State for the Environment what consultation he has had with the chairman of the National Rivers Authority regarding the level of pollution in the rivers and brooks in the Rochdale borough.
§ Mr. BaldryThe National Rivers Authority (NRA) has the duty to monitor pollution of watercourses and has wide powers to review discharge consents, and to prosecute those that breach their consents, or discharge pollutants without consent. It is the NRA that is responsible for taking action in individual cases. There have been no consultations with the chairman of the NRA on this case.
