HL Deb 15 January 1992 vol 534 cc9-10WA
Lord Trefgarne

asked Her Majesty's Government:

Whether they are satisfied that cast iron fittings installed at or near the surface of British roads and pavements, including those supplied from outside the United Kingdom, are all manufactured to comply with the relevant British Standard.

The Minister of State, Department of Transport (Lord Brabazon of Tara)

Cast iron fittings on trunk roads and motorways are required to comply with the relevant British standards, or any similar standard recognised in another EC member state, provided that the standard offers equivalent guarantees of safety, suitability and fitness for the purpose. Requirements of other publicly-maintainable roads (the vast majority) are the responsibility of the local highway authority.

Lord Trefgarne

asked Her Majesty's Government:

Whether cast iron fittings to be installed at or near the surface of British roads and pavements are required to show the country of origin.

Lord Brabazon of Tara

Not on trunk roads or motorways. Requirements on other publicly-maintainable roads (the vast majority) are the responsibility of the local highway authority.
