asked Her Majesty's Government:

Which are the six countries from which most asylum seekers and other immigrants have arrived in this country and been made subject to civil charges under the Immigration (Carriers' Liability) Act.

In the first three quarters of 1991 the six nationalities which were the subject of most charges under the Immigration (Carriers' Liability) Act 1987 were Sri Lanka (1,729), Turkey (952), Somalia (838), Nigeria (811), Zaire (670) and Bangladesh (539). The six principal points of embarkation for all nationalities giving rise to charges were Lagos (1,228), Dhaka (527), Paris (405), Calais (357), New York (292) and Sofia (244).

How many civil charges have been imposed on Nigerian Airways and Aeroflot since the passage of the Immigration (Carriers' Liability) Act; how many have been paid and what sums are outstanding.
