HC Deb 18 February 1992 vol 204 c93W
Mr. Andrew F. Bennett

To ask the Secretary of State for the Home Department what plans he has to establish a computer interface between the police national computer and the Schengen information system computer; when this will occur; and what elements of police intelligence will be exchanged between the systems.

Mr. Peter Lloyd

There are no such plans. The provision of a European information system was considered at the European Council at Maastricht in December 1991. The following extract from the conclusions of the European Council is relevantThe European Council requests the Co-ordinators to examine what the structure of the European Information System should be and to take care that the technical and legal provisions—including the protection of personal privacy—are being taken to build the system. In view of the need for a speedy conclusion of these activities, it is desirable in the first place to establish whether the arrangements already existing between certain Member States may also apply to all the Member States.
