HC Deb 13 February 1992 vol 203 c630W
1992. Dr. David Clark

To ask the Secretary of State for Wales what was the amount of agricultural land in Wales in each grade, including 3a and 3b, in(a) 1986 and (b)

Mr. David Hunt

The published agricultural land classification—ALC—maps and data are based on strategic planning work carried out in the 1960s and do not sub-divide grade 3 land. The original survey showed the proportion of land in each grade in Wales to be as follows:

Per cent.
Grade 1 0.2
Grade 2 2.3
Grade 3 17.5
Grade 4 44.2
Grade 5 35.8

The ALC maps and data provide only a very general indication of the distribution of land quality. Resurveying at a larger scale is necessary to obtain a definitive grade for individual sites.
