Mr. Leigh
[holding answer 11 February 1992]: The following is, for each of the last two completed financial years and the current year to date, a breakdown by DTI region and travel-to-work area, of DTI innovation budget grants paid to companies.
Please note, however, that the majority of the innovation budget is devoted to support for collaborative R and D projects where payments are made to one of the participating organisations (project leader) who distributes the grant to the other collaborators on the DTI's behalf. In these cases only one travel-to-work area is recorded on the DTI's database, but much of the money shown to be going to a particular travel-to-work area will be passed on to other companies, in other travel-to-work areas and possibly in other regions.
