§ Mr. Gordon BrownTo ask the Chancellor of the Exchequer if he will publish figures on the same basis as table 4, appendix 1, of "Economic Trends", January 1992, on the total percentage of gross income accounted for by taxes of all kinds paid by(a) the bottom decile of households and (b) the top decile giving comparable figures for households ranked by equivalised disposable income for each year since 1979.
§ Mr. NelsonFigures on the basis of table 4, appendix 1, of "Economic Trends", January 1992 are only published for the years 1987 onwards. The results for 1987 were published in the May 1990 edition of "Economic Trends" and the 1988 results appeared in the March 1991 edition. The required ratios can be derived from these results.
Figures for earlier years are not published for decile groups of households ranked on an equivalised basis. In the March 1991 edition of "Economic Trends", table P shows estimates for direct taxes as a percentage of gross income and indirect taxes as a percentage of disposable income for alternative years back to 1977 for quintile groups ranked by equivalised disposable income. The required ratios for quintile groups can be derived from these figures.
