HL Deb 17 December 1992 vol 541 c52WA
Lord Mason of Barnsley

asked Her Majesty's Government:

How many people are employed in (a) licensed betting officers and (b) the Tote bookmakers as managers and cashiers; how many of those employees they estimate would be required to work in the evening if betting hours were extended; and how the contracts of employment of managers and cashiers will be amended to cover extended hours.

Viscount Ullswater

Information about the number of people employed in licensed betting offices is not collected centrally. Figures provided by the Tote indicate that 191 managers and 308 part-time cashiers are currently employed in their off-course betting offices, as well as casual staff when required. Patterns of work are a matter for negotiation and agreement between employers and employees, depending on individual needs and preferences. It is therefore not possible to estimate the numbers who might work in the evening were hours to be extended. Contracts of employment are also a matter for employers to agree with their employees, as part of their normal contractual arrangements.
