To ask the Secretary of State for Scotland how many whisky distilleries are currently in operation in Scotand; and what was the number in operation in 1987 and in 1982.

Mr. Stewart

There are currently 103 distilleries operating in Scotland. The figures for 1982 and 1987 were 124 and 90 respectively.
