HC Deb 16 December 1992 vol 216 c262W
Mrs. Mahon

To ask the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs what representations Her Majesty's Government have made to Turkey about the rights of minorities and people of non-Turkish origin in Turkey and about the death penalty.

Mr. Goodlad

The Government have regular contact with the Turkish Government on the subject of human rights.

The issue was most recently discussed during the visit of the Turkish Prime Minister in November. During the visit Mr. Demirel reiterated his Government's commitment to its programme of reforms which aims at improving human rights and increasing democratisation in the country.

We welcome this commitment on the part of the Turks and look forward to the early implementation of the Government's programme.
