HC Deb 16 December 1992 vol 216 c264W
Mr. Steinberg

To ask the Secretary of State for Education if he will estimate the number of schools which rely on temporary appointments to maintain an adequate teaching staff.

Mr. Forth

The information requested is not available. In January 1992 19,700 full-time teachers in England were employed under temporary contracts compared with 334,300 on permanent contracts. Temporary contracts do not necessarily imply recruitment difficulties; they may be made for a variety of reasons.
