To ask the Chancellor of the Exchequer what is the official estimate of United States and Japanese direct investment in the United Kingdom as a percentage of direct investment in all EC countries in each year from 1979 to the latest available date.

[holding answer 14 December 1992]: Fully comparable information on direct inward investment in the European Community from outside the EC is not available. However, the following estimates for the years 1985 to 1991 have been prepared based on the most readily available sources.
