To ask the Secretary of State for Scotland if he will make a statement on levels of health spending in Scotland.

Mr. Stewart

Net expenditure on the health service in Scotland in 1993–94 is planned to be £3,766 million, up by £150.7 million—4.2 per cent. over the 1992–93 plans. The 1993–94 figure represents a real-terms increase of 1.4 per cent. above original 1992–93 plans. In 1993–94 the overall increase in health spending since 1979–80 will be 47 per cent. in real terms.
