HC Deb 16 December 1992 vol 216 c234W
Mr. Hague

To ask the President of the Board of Trade if he will make a statement on whether the restrictions on the import of cars from Japan will be maintained in 1993.

Mr. Sainsbury

The Government have decided that the United Kingdom will remain a restricted market in 1993 and 1994 for the purposes of implementing the agreement entitled the "Elements of Consensus" concluded last year between the European Community and Japan covering imports of cars after 1992. The position of the United Kingdom during the remainder of the period covered by the agreement up to the end of 1999 will be determined in the light of the circumstances at the time. I have placed a copy of the elements of consensus in the House of Commons Library.
