HL Deb 15 December 1992 vol 541 c28WA
Lord Dean of Beswick

asked Her Majesty's Government:

What (i) salary and (ii) expenses are currently payable to individual MEPs, and what was the total government expenditure under these headings for the last financial year.

The Earl of Caithness

The salary paid to an MEP out of the Consolidated Fund amounts to £30,854 per annum (the same as a Member of the House of Commons). Where an MEP is also a Member of the UK Parliament, he or she receives only one third of that salary (£10,285.67—also paid out of the Consolidated Fund) in addition to his or her UK Parliamentary salary. The total costs to the Consolidated Fund in 1991–92 (including salaries and national insurance) was £2,543,679. MEPs' expenses are not borne by the UK Government but on the European Community budget.
