HC Deb 09 December 1992 vol 215 c706W
Mr. Battle

To ask the Secretary of State for the Environment (1) what was(a) the number of applications received for the flats over shops initiative in England and Wales for 1991–92 and (b) the total value of these applications;

(2) how many flats have become available for rent in England and Wales as a result of the flats over shops initiative.

Sir George Young

A total of 210 local authorities in England applied for resources totalling over £41 million in the first year (1992–93) of the fiats over shops scheme, of which 57 received supplementary credit approvals totalling £5,047.500. Should all these proceed to plan, then it is likely that the number of additional units of accommodation raised will be in the region of 400. In addition, the Housing Corporation has a programme of its own. A number of other bodies—including some retailers—are seeking to bring vacant space above shops back into use, partly stimulated by the Government's initiative. Separate arrangements, which are not directly comparable, are operated in Wales by the Secretary of State for Wales.
