Mr. Richards

To ask the Secretary of State for the Home Department (1) what part of Wales has the highest per capita conviction rate for drug offences in Wales;

(2) what percentage of convictions in Wales (a) involving under-18s and (b) in total, are for drug-elated offences.

To ask the Secretary of State for the Home Department what has been the percentage increase in the amount of cocaine seized in the United Kingdom over the last 10 years.

Mr. Jack

The information requested is contained in table 1.1 of the Home Office statistical bulletin "Statistics of Drugs Seizures and Offenders dealt with, United Kingdom, 1991", a copy of which is in the Library. The table shows that in 1981, 21 kg of cocaine was seized; in 1991 the corresponding amount was 1,078 kg, representing a proportional increase of 5,133 per cent.

To ask the Secretary of State for the Home Department how much crack cocaine was seized in the United Kingdom in 1991–92.

Mr. Jack

There were 583 recorded seizures of the type of cocaine known as "crack" in the United Kingdom during 1991. These weighed 1.9 kg. Data for 1992 are not yet available.
