HL Deb 07 December 1992 vol 541 cc1-2WA
Lord Kennet

asked Her Majesty's Government:

What are the reasons why they decided to deny all knowledge and ignore all evidence of the Israeli nuclear weapons programme and Israeli nuclear weapons (H.L. Deb., 12th February 1992, col. 761); when this policy decision was taken, and in the light of what persuasions.

Baroness Chalker of Wallasey

As the noble Earl, Lord Arran, explained to the noble Lords, Lord Kennet and Lord Cocks, during the debate in the House on 12th February, we have no evidence either to confirm or deny the rumours that Israel may have nuclear weapons. There has been continued speculation about the Israeli nuclear programme and we continue to encourage her to accede to the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons.
