HC Deb 04 December 1992 vol 215 c440W
Mr. Worthington

To ask the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs what assessment his Department has made of the conduct of the presidential elections in Cameroon on 11 October.

Mr. Lennox-Boyd

Whilst we welcome the holding of multi-party elections as an important step in the process of democratisation, we noted with concern that the conduct of the recent election was flawed and that the primary responsibility for the shortcomings rests with the Government of Cameroon. In the light of the widespread dissatisfaction with the outcome inside Cameroon, we have urged the Government strongly to begin a process of national reconciliation among political parties.
