Mr. Griffiths

To ask the President of the Board of Trade what information he has on the number of(a) prosecutions and (b) convictions for offences related to pyramid, direct selling and multi-level marketing practices and advertisements in each year from 1982.

Mr. Leigh

[holding answer 23 November 1992]: Part XI of the Fair Trading Act covers pyramid selling and similar trading schemes. The only prosecution brought by this Department under this legislation was in 1987. Two companies and their directors pleaded guilty to 39 offences under the Fair Trading Act 1973 and the Pyramid Selling Schemes Regulations 1973.
