HL Deb 01 December 1992 vol 540 cc86-7WA
Lord Kennet

asked Her Majesty's Government:

Whether any environmental impact assessments or any cost benefit analyses, have been carried out or are intended, and covering how many years, into the decisions to cut by 30 per cent. London Underground's general spending on essential repairs and upgrading, while proceeding with funding for the new line through Docklands, and whether they will publish them.

The Earl of Caithness

The decisions on the financial support for London Transport announced in the Autumn Statement took account of all the relevant factors, including the need for essential repairs and upgrading on London Underground, the benefits that the Jubilee Line Extension would bring to Docklands and London as a whole, and the very tight constraints on public expenditure generally.

We are confident that the provision made will enable London Underground to make continued progress in improving the asset health of the network. Annual investment over the next three years on the existing network should be higher than at any point in the 1970s and 1980s.

Environmental impact assessments and cost-benefit analyses on specific schemes are carried out where appropriate by London Underground, who are responsible for investment priorities on the network.
