HC Deb 01 December 1992 vol 215 cc118-9W
Dr. Moonie

To ask the Secretary of State for Education what proportion of the Higher Education Funding Council for England's budget is expected to be spent on supporting research activities in the financial year 1992–93 and the planned totals for 1993–94, 1994–95 and 1995–96.

Mr. Forman

The Higher Education Funding Council for England will become responsible for funding higher education in England on 1 April 1993. The council is expected to announce its funding for teaching and research for 1993–94 early in 1993. The proportion of recurrent funding allocated for research by the Universities Funding Council in academic year 1992–93, before taking account of the transfer of resources to the research councils for the new boundary for dual support, was 35 per cent. The Government have indicated that they expect no significant change in the proportion of funding allocated for research in higher education in 1993–94. Funding council allocations are determined on an annual basis.
