To ask the Secretary of State for Wales if he will make a statement concerning the implications for Wales of the GATT negotiations.

I welcome the agreement between the EC and the United States of America on the outstanding differences between them. We await the full report from the Commission, but the agriculture agreement appears to be broadly compatible with reforms of the CAP regimes agreed last year.

The need now is to return to Geneva to make the agriculture agreement multilateral and complete negotiations in all other areas, including liberalisation of trade and services and tariff reductions. We believe it is possible to reach political agreement this year.
