To ask the Secretary of State for Defence, pursuant to the oral answer to the hon. Member for Falkirk, West (Mr. Canavan), of 15 October,Official Report, column 139, whether any radioactive waste arising from military nuclear activities has been (a) disposed of or (b) stored long term in Scotland.

Yes. Radioactive waste arising from the MOD military nuclear programme in Scotland is stored at Rosyth and Faslane, and it is disposed of to the Atomic Energy Authority site at Dounreay from the adjacent Vulcan naval reactor test establishment. These activities are carried out under the oversight of the appropriate civil regulatory authorities.
