asked Her Majesty's Government:

How many children under 16 were dependent on income support in (a) England and Wales and (b) Scotland; and what percentage of those under 16 each of these figures represents.

The latest available figures are(a) 1,827,878 children under 16 are dependent on income support in England and Wales. (b) 216,957 children under 16 are dependent on income support in Scotland. These figures represent (a) 18 per cent. of the under 16 population of England and Wales and (b) 21 per cent. of the under 16 population of Scotland.
