To ask the Secretary of State for Wales if he will publish a table showing the most recent estimate of expenditure by local authorities on accommodating homeless families in temporary or bed-and-breakfast accommodation; and if he will make a statement.

Local authority net current expenditure on bed-and-breakfast accommodation for homeless persons in 1989–90 was £1,091,000. Expenditure information on homeless persons in other forms of temporary accommodation is not available centrally.

To ask the Secretary of State for Wales how many people are currently homeless in Wales.

Mr. Nicholas Bennett

During the quarter April to June 1991, 6,039 persons were included in households accepted as homeless by local authorities under section 58 of the Housing Act 1985.
