HC Deb 22 October 1991 vol 196 cc640-1W
Mr. David Marshall

To ask the Secretary of State for Scotland what measures he intends taking to reduce the number of firearms available to criminals in Scotland; and if he will make a statement.

Lord James Douglas-Hamilton

Under the provisions of the Firearms (Amendment) Act 1988 very strict controls are imposed on the acquisition and possession of firearms, one of the purposes of these measures being to restrict the ability of criminals to obtain firearms. Responsibility for detecting illegally held firearms is a matter for the police who make strenuous efforts to prevent criminals acquiring firearms which they may subsequently use in committing crimes. The courts also deal very severely with those who appear before them charged with crimes involving the use of firearms. Firearms control is a matter which the Government keep under continual review.
