Mr. Turner

To ask the Secretary of State for Education and Science how many local education authorities had tertiary reorganisation proposals approved by him in the past five years; and how many were Conservative-controlled local authorities.

Since 1 January 1987, a total of 13 local education authorities have had statutory proposals involving the establishment of a tertiary college approved by the Secretary of State. Of these local authorities, two were Conservative controlled at the time the proposals were published. A breakdown of the proposals is given in the table:
