HC Deb 21 October 1991 vol 196 c345W
Mr. Menzies Campbell

To ask the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs if he will make it his policy to seek further reductions in strategic nuclear weapons.

Mr. Douglas Hogg

We have supported throughout United States-Soviet efforts to reduce strategic nuclear weapons. Our policy is to maintain an effective minimum nuclear deterrent. We have always taken the view that, if there were to be further substantial reductions in United States and Soviet arsenals, and no significant improvements in defensive capabilities, we would consider how best we might contribute to the arms control process in the light of the changed circumstances.
