HC Deb 21 October 1991 vol 196 c441W
Mr. Redmond

To ask the Secretary of State for Defence what was the final destination of the nuclear reactors for(a) HMS Churchill, (b) HMS Dreadnought and (c) HMS Swiftsure.

Mr. Alan Clark

The defuelled reactors from HMS Churchill and HMS Dreadnought remain within the vessels' hulls at Rosyth naval base. HMS Swiftsure remains in commission and has had neither reactor nor fuel removed.

Mr. Menzies Campbell

To ask the Secretary of State for Defence what is his policy on Anglo-French collaboration in a nuclear-powered attack submarine development programme.

Mr. Kenneth Carlisle

As my right hon. Friend the Minister of State for Defence Procurement explained during the defence debate on 15 October (Official Report, column 173), our new class of nuclear-powered submarines will be based on the existing design of the Trafalgar class submarines. The scope for collaboration as part of this programme is likely to be very limited. We will keep the scope for co-operation, where this makes sense in operational and value for money terms and is compatible with our bilateral arrangements with the United States, under review as studies proceed.
