HL Deb 21 October 1991 vol 531 c107WA
Lord Jenkins of Putney

asked Her Majesty's Government:

Whether a nuclear weapon was lost in the South Atlantic with HMS "Sheffield" on 10th May 1982; whether this loss will be referred to next month in a report on marine pollution by the International Atomic Energy Agency; and if so whether they will retract their previous denials.

The Earl of Arran

There has never been any incident in the South Atlantic or elsewhere involving a British nuclear weapon leading to its loss or to the dispersal of radioactive contamination. This has been made clear to the International Atomic Energy Agency.
