HC Deb 21 October 1991 vol 196 cc314-5W
Mr. Redmond

To ask the Chancellor of the Exchequer if he will make a statement on the future of the customs service in Yorkshire and Humberside from 1 January 1992.

Mrs. Gillian Shephard

In Yorkshire and Humberside, as in the rest of the United Kingdom, customs controls are being updated to prepare for the single market on 1 January 1993 and to meet developing business needs. The objective is to make continued improvements in effectiveness, particularly in the fight against drugs smuggling, while facilitating the freest possible movement of travellers and freight.

Customs officers in the region continue to play an important part in protecting society as demonstrated by the seizure of drugs at Hull worth £1.8 million in the past year. Flexible anti-smuggling teams will continue to work in the region after 1992.
