Mr. Vaz

To ask the Secretary of State for the Environment what steps he is taking to alleviate the difficulties for those local authorities which had deposits in the Bank of Credit and Commerce International.

Mr. Key

I refer the hon. Member to the answer given by my right hon. Friend the Prime Minister on 11 July 1991 to the hon. Member for Cunninghame, North (Mr. Wilson) at column 1082 and to the answer I gave on 24 July 1991 to the hon. Member for Mansfield (Mr. Meale) at column660.

Officials from the Department have met representatives of the local authorities affected by the closure of BCCI to clarify the implications for authorities of the bank's closure, and to identify possible measures which the affected authorities might wish to consider. We have also received a number of requests from individual authorities for various forms of assistance and we are considering these.
