HC Deb 18 October 1991 vol 196 cc302-3W
Mr. Cryer

To ask the Secretary of State for Defence whether any nuclear materials recovered from Iraq under provisions of the United Nations Security Council resolution 687 by the United Nations special inspection team have been sent to the United Kingdom for analysis; and what plans exist for the long-term future of such recovered nuclear materials from Iraq.

Mr. Archie Hamilton

To date, no nuclear material recovered from Iraq has been sent to the United Kingdom for analysis. A small number of centrifuge components have, however, been passed by the International Atomic Energy Agency inspectors to the United Kingdom for analysis.

Security Council resolution 687 requires the destruction, removal or rendering harmless under international supervision of all Iraq's weapons of mass destruction, nuclear weapons-usable material and related items. The nuclear materials recovered from Iraq will be under the exclusive control of the International Atomic Energy Agency, and it will be for the agency to decide on the final disposal of the material.
