HC Deb 18 October 1991 vol 196 cc293-4W
Mr. Rowlands

To ask the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs what estimate he has of the number of deaths and injuries to Kurds in northern Iraq as a result of Turkish aircraft bombing; what representations he has made to both sides; and if he will make a statement.

Mr. Douglas Hogg

We have no authoritative figures for casualties resulting from Turkish military action in northern Iraq. We have condemned terrorist activities, including those of the PKK, on many occasions. We regret any casualties amongst innocent civilians as a result of the military operations and have made our concerns clear both to the Turkish Government and to the leadership of the Iraqi Kurdish Front.

Mr. Flynn

To ask the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs what information Her Majesty's Government possess on the nuclear activities undertaken at the An Walid site in Iraq.

Mr. Douglas Hogg

Information derived from inspections in Iraq is confidential to the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) and to the United Nations Special Commission (UNSCOM). It is for them to determine the extent to which such information is made public. The only publicly available information about this site is contained in paragraphs 17 and 18 of United Nations Security Council document S/22986 of 28 August, a copy of which is already in the Library of the House.

Mr. Flynn

To ask the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs whether Her Majesty's Government have been informed by the United Nations of any discovery of United Kingdom origin technology, technical blueprints, equipment, chemicals or materials, by the special United Nations inspection commission at any of the sites or facilities it has inspected in Iraq, pursuant to United Nations Security Council resolution 687.

Mr. Douglas Hogg

Yes. The details have been passed to my right hon. Friend the Secretary of State for Trade and Industry.

Mr. Cryer

To ask the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs when Her Majesty's Government received the second consolidated report of the United Nations special inspection team visit to Iraq.

Mr. Douglas Hogg

The consolidated report of the first two International Atomic Energy Agency inspections in Iraq under United Nations Security Council resolution 687 was transmitted to Security Council members on 12 July, and was circulated formally as a Security Council document (S/22788) on 15 July. A copy is available in the Library of the House.

Mr. Flynn

To ask the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs what representations were made by Her Majesty's ambassador to the United Nations to his Iraqi counterpart over the detention in Iraq in September of three United Kingdom citizens as part of the United Nations special inspection team in Iraq, pursuant to United Nations Security Council resolution 687.

Mr. Douglas Hogg

The United Nations Secretary General and the President of the Security Council, speaking on behalf of the Council, protested to the Iraqi Foreign Minister and the Iraqi Permanent Representative in New York about the detention of the United Nations/International Atomic Energy Agency staff in Baghdad, including the three United Kingdom nationals. The director general of the International Atomic Energy Agency also took the issue up with the Iraqi Permanent Representative in Vienna. The inspection team were released on 28 September.
