To ask the Secretary of State for Education and Science how many post-graduate awards were allocated for the academic year 1991–92; how many were related to(a) sciences and (b) social sciences and humanities; and if he will make a statement.

A total of 8,446 awards have been offered to new students undertaking higher degrees in the United Kingdom in the academic year 1991–92 of which 6,596 were in the sciences and 1,850 in the fields of social sciences and humanities. Actual allocations are not yet known.
