HC Deb 28 November 1991 vol 199 c636W
Mr. Home Robertson

To ask the Secretary of State for Scotland what inquiries he is conducting into the quantity and quality of specialist education for speech and language-disordered children; and if he will make a statement.

Mr. Michael Forsyth

HM inspectorate of schools is currently examining the provision being made by education authorities for children with language and communication disorders, with the intention of describing and disseminating best practice and making recommendations about effective provision for children with these disorders.

I have also commissioned research by Stirling university into current policies and practices of education authorities for children with specific learning difficulties in Scotland and into the provision that is made for these children. This study will embrace children exhibiting dyslexia.

These projects are directed towards establishing the quality and quantity of educational provision made for children with speech and language disorders and with other special needs.
