HC Deb 28 November 1991 vol 199 c584W
Mr. Fatchett

To ask the Secretary of State for Education and Science how many primary schools in(a) England and (b) Wales were built before 1900.

Mr. Fallon

The Department does not maintain a record of the age of school buildings but the "Study of School Building" published in 1977, which was based on a sample survey of primary and secondary schools, reported that, of the then 23,000 primary schools in England and Wales, 8,000 were built before 1903.

My right hon. Friend the Secretary of State for Wales is responsible for schools in Wales.
