HL Deb 27 November 1991 vol 532 cc87-8WA
The Earl of Selkirk

asked Her Majesty's Government:

Whether they propose to permit the destruction of the ancient monument situated on the Downs dividing Wiltshire and Dorset and known as Win Green.

Baroness Blatch

The ancient monument known as Win Green Clump Round Barrow is included on the Secretary of State's schedule of monuments and as such is afforded statutory protection under the Ancient Monuments and Archaeological Areas Act 1979. The consent of the Secretary of State would be required in respect of any proposed works to the scheduled site, in addition to any planning considerations that may apply; this is known as the scheduled monument consent (SMC) procedure, and any application for SMC would be determined by the Secretary of State after consultation with the department's professional advisers, English Heritage.
